Last Tuesday night the club finally came full circle and got back onto the hills after the foot and mouth outbreak of close on 20 years ago forced those early Chain Gang pioneers onto the highways and by-ways for their exercise fix.
Approximately 14 brave soles of mixed cycling abilities took to the hills of
Tursillagh above Kielduff. We walked around the wind turbines, doing a mix of hill, bog, road and track hiking. The walk was approximately 7 km and we had it done easily in 2 hours.
The highlight of the evening was a clear starry night with dry conditions. The views were spectacular as we cast our eyes over the lights of Tralee, Loop Head lighthouse, Tralee Bay and Fenit as well as Lixnaw, Kilflynn and a sizeable chunk of north Kerry.
We had the customary coffee break on the dry grasses over looking the lights of North Kerry. Once we were done and dusted a well earned drink and debrief followed in the Meadowlands. This was a lovely alternative to the cycling and great company. Many thanks to Tomás who guided us around like the expert he is. Thanks go to Brenda who brought up the rear making sure no stragglers got lost.
Next Week:
Tuesday 5th March
The plan is for a beach walk from Stradbally to Fermoyle and back. This will cover either 12 or 14 kilometres, is more or less pan flat and suitable for ordinary trainers or runners as footwear. Good warm clothing is advised and the other trappings of hillwalking are also recommended.
Meet at car park opposite Blennerville Windmill @ 6:30 – OR car park opposite Tomasíns, Stradbally @ 7:00. (In line with Leave No Trace principles good car pooling is strongly advised).
